About Salpakan: Apat na Hukbo 3D

In 1970, Filipino inventor Sofronio H. Pasola Jr. created Salpakan, the Game of the Generals, with the help of his son Ronnie, who suggested adding the Spies. First released to the public in 1973, it became the game generations of Filipinos grew up with: a battle of hidden ranks where reading your opponent matters as much as the pieces you hold, and where a humble Private can bring down a Spy and a Spy can topple a five-star General.

Salpakan: Apat na Hukbo 3D was made to honour his legacy. It keeps the heart of what he created, the hidden ranks, the silent arbiter and the gamble of every clash, and carries it forward into a new format for a new generation of players.

What stays true to the original

• 21 pieces per army, from the Flag and the Privates to the 5-star General and the two Spies
• Ranks hidden from your opponents, with an arbiter who decides each challenge
• Winning by capturing the enemy Flag or by bringing your own Flag across the field

What is new

• Four armies on a plus-shaped field, every army for itself or 2 vs 2
• Promotions for pieces that win two challenges, and succession when a 5-star General falls
• Captured armies that switch sides, or become prisoners of war in 2 vs 2
• Six battlefields with obstacles, computer generals from history at four levels, and online rooms with team radio

Salpakan was invented by Sofronio H. Pasola Jr. Salpakan: Apat na Hukbo 3D is an independent tribute by Golden Boy Labs and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Pasola family or the publishers of Game of the Generals.

Rules of Salpakan, four armies

Four armies of 21 pieces deploy on the four arms of the field. You see your own ranks; every other piece wears a gas mask, and only its armband shows whose it is. The arbiter decides each clash and tells only the two armies involved who won.

• Turns go clockwise. Move one piece one square forward, back, left or right.
• Moving onto an enemy piece is a challenge. The higher rank wins; equal ranks are both removed.
• The Spy beats every officer and the Sergeant but loses to a Private. The Flag loses to everything, except that a Flag attacking a Flag wins.
• Capture an army's Flag and that army falls. In every-army-for-itself, its survivors switch to your side. In 2 vs 2, they become prisoners of war, disarmed and marched to your camp. Any prisoners the fallen army held pass to you.
• Promotion: a piece that wins 2 challenges may go up one rank, up to 4 stars. A Private may refuse, to stay a Spy hunter, and promote later. The Spy and the Flag never promote. Nobody else is told.
• Succession (if on): when your 5-star General falls, your highest officer moves up one rank.
• Win by being the last army (or alliance) standing, or by marching your Flag across the whole field to the far back row (the army directly opposite you). If an enemy stands next to it there, it must survive until your next turn.
• Obstacles, if the battle has them, block their square: no piece can enter it.
• Computer generals play at four levels, from Recruit (makes mistakes, forgets clashes) to Legend (remembers every clash and hunts your Flag). Each historical general also has his own style. They never see your hidden ranks.
• In 2 vs 2 your ally sits opposite you and you cannot attack each other. Whether allies see each other's ranks is set when the battle is created.
• The Radio at the bottom talks to everyone (All) or only to your ally (Team). Against the computer, your computer ally takes orders on Team: attack, defend or status. Online, Team messages are encrypted between the two allies.
